Swollen is a Folk song with a struture reminiscent of the singer-songwriter genre. Tiki Black wrote the lyrics and the music. The piece was Finalist at the 2009 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. It is performed as part of Tiki Blacks debut album Out of the Black by Tiki on vocals, John Ellis on piano and an assorted group of great musicians.
Radio Host Bob Meye says of the song sent to him as part of the original limited edition EP:
“Lovely, soulful, meaningful”
This bread has leaven,
Had my mind all swollen
I took it out like the snake’s venom
And I spat it out because it’s poison
I don’t want this feed, no more
The last straw broke me down No more lies no more twisted words
I am not hungry Leave me out I am not hungry No, no Leave me out of the king’s feast
This bread has leaven
Had my soul all swollen
So I stepped out of this fast glory train Before my blood got too blue for my vein
I don’t want this puff no more The last straw blew me up No more lies no more empty words
I am no trophy Leave me out I am no trophy No, no Leave me out of the king’s parade
I cannot be living numbed inside.
No, I can not breathe buried inside.
I cannot be loving scared inside…
No more frills to hide the hell inside,
My body’s swollen.
I cannot breathe, Let me out.
I cannot breathe, Ah, Ah Let me out of the king’s cage.
